We were ALL glad to see forecasts for clear skies this year. Second weekend in August in Oriental, NC, is the place to be for Dragon Boat racers; military teams race in open water on Friday, civilian teams (some with military assistance) race at Grace Harbor, in River Dunes, on Saturday.
Flora Moorman invited me to bring hoops to the 2012 Dragon Boat races, which were held in downtown Oriental. We got rained out. I came again in 2013, to the River Dunes development, and had a ball.
Unfortunately for the pictures, it was SO bright and sunny, I couldn’t see anything in the viewfinder. I was shooting blind. True “point and click.” Looks like they came out ok.
The course was 325 yards long, and races took about 90 seconds. 18 teams started on Saturday, racing in three flights of up to three boats each. Scores were totaled and the boats / teams with the lowest overall score raced each other at the end of the day.
It’s fun to watch the races, but the pictures kinda all look the same after a while. The images are added in random order deliberately; I couldn’t keep track of the teams.
If you don’t mind the drive, you can watch the Dragon Boat races and still catch the Pirate Invasion in Beaufort, NC. Ubi the Pirate Clown will be there, creating balloon swords and cutlasses for children of all ages.
This year, I took the ferry from Cherry Branch to Minnesott Beach. It’s a great little trip, about 15 minutes from shore to shore, and it cuts off miles of ugly driving.
Looking forward to the 2014 series!
