The tree was a crape myrtle faurii. It died suddenly one autumn and simply didn’t come back in the spring. I cut the crown off and left the main trunk, which served as support for tomato plants for a few years. Over time, the bark crumbled off and left the smooth wood behind.
I’d been thinking about painting it. Yesterday, I got out my collection of pints of leftover house paint, found a few compatible colors, and went to work.
I’d have been just as likely to paint the tree in shades of red but it was blues that came to hand first.
My male neighbors think it’s strange, but their wives think it’s pretty.
