Zuma is a 14-year old golden retriever who picked up some store-bought hoops that the grandchildren had left behind and did his best to hoop. Store-bought hoops don’t hold up to a golden retriever’s teeth very well. I rather like his style, knowing instinctively that the smaller hula hoop worked better around the neck and shoulders, and the larger hoop would work for knee hooping.
Zuma’s family found my article about how to make a hula hoop and Zuma’s life got much more fun. The heavier and wider tubing is easier to grip with teeth. (I usually don’t recommend open-mouth hooping to the people I teach, but dogs have a different idea of what can be carried in the teeth.)
