I need not to comment on other people’s Pinterest pins and posts. Thus far, it appears my friends are making nice with each other. So I’ll keep a log here, and let it be anonymous, and vent.
Pin: boil tap water to make clear ice.
“Use boiling water instead of tap water to make clear ice. Great for putting fruit, herbs, flowers or surprises in.” Need to remember this one…
No, you don’t really. Why would you spend energy heating water just so you can spend even more energy making that now-hot water extra cold? Besides, who owns ice trays anymore?
Pin: put sheets of newspaper over dirt, under mulch, in your garden.
The newspaper will prevent any grass and weed seeds from germinating, but unlike fabric, it will decompose after about 18 months. By that time, any grass and weed seeds that were present in the soil on planting will be dead. It’s green, it’s cheaper than fabric, and when you decide to remove or redesign the bed later on, you will not have the headache you would with fabric.
Has anyone other than me tried this? Do you have any idea of how much mulch it takes to really cover the newspaper? As the mulch moves around, and it will because it skids over the newspaper, the edges of the paper get exposed. When you hit them with the lawnmower, streaks of white shreds fly across the lawn. Newspaper takes forever to disintegrate completely. Grass and weed seeds can outlast any treatment you are willing to use in your home. In the event of nuclear Armageddon, I’d still bet on the witch grass. You can’t even burn that stuff–the ashes will sprout.
