If you live in the central third of North Carolina, you can buy a weighted hula hoop from me at any of the events where I take the hoops, or at one of my classes at the Garner Senior Center or the Cary Senior Center. You can also give me a call. Mine aren’t as heavy as some of the ones used in health clubs, but they’ll give you a whole-body workout that’s aerobic, low-impact, and helps your balance and core strength.
I don’t know of any stores in North Carolina that carry weighted hula hoops.
If you live somewhere other than the Research Triangle Park area of NC, try Hooping.org. You can find people who make and sell hoops all over the country through that site.
Make a Hoop
You can also make your own hoops. It’s easy. (And if you need more than five hoops, it’s MUCH cheaper to make your own than to buy them from an athletic supply store. Usually, people who want a large number of hoops run day care centers. Hoops you make from irrigation tubing last WAY longer than the ones you can buy.
Ask a different question: What do you really want to accomplish with a weighted exercise hoop?
Several gyms and workout centers offer classes using a weighted hoop, with some as heavy as six pounds. Most of the hoops I sell to women weigh less than one pound. Only the big six-footer (yes, that’s six feet across) weighs six pounds. I can use it for about 10 minutes at a time. (In addition, I won’t let children who weigh less than 100# use it at all.) While the Big One is an ab workout, it’s also a bit boring, and no-where near as much fun, or aerobic, as my regular size dance hoops. I’ll move around the neighboring parking lot when I’m dancing for more than an hour.
Big heavy hoops hurt. Even little lightweight ones can bruise, and leave a bit of a sore spot the first few times, but the big ones REALLY hurt.
Hoop dance as exercise, or as art, either participatory or performance, is WAY more fun than the small amount of extra abs workout you might get from spinning a 6# weighted hula hoop for five or six minutes.
I make and sell hoops for people in Eastern NC, most of whom buy them at events. If you don’t live nearby and are looking for a custom hoop by mail, try Diana Lopez’ hoops from Body Hoops.
